Werewolves in Theory

A Complete Theoretical Biology of Homo sapiens lycanus

Homo sapiens lycanus

This page is a covering note for the printed book. It is not the novel. If you have never opened the series, start with the paragraphs below.

This is Book 2. Same method as Book 1, different organism. It reconstructs the werewolf as a biological phenotype — not a curse, and not a man who becomes a wolf.

The Lycian condition is an endogenous retrovirus (LERV) seated in the genome for roughly eight hundred thousand years. The full moon is a photobiological key: a wavelength that hits a receptor in the eye and starts a hydraulic engine. The shift conserves mass. What stands up is a hyper-muscular crouched biped, not a quadrupedal canid. Silver still kills, by a different molecular route than it kills the haemophage. Same metal, different enzyme. That coincidence is part of the evidence.

Book 1 is useful, not required. The two hunts are different in kind. The printed volume is the derivation (about 82,000 words). This page is the covering note.

New to the series? Four steps for a first reader. The printed volumes remain the full texts.

The claim

The Lycian phenotype is an endogenous retroviral inheritance approximately eight hundred thousand years old. The full moon is a photobiological ignition key. The shift is a hydraulic engine under mass-conservation law, producing a hyper-muscular crouched biped, not a quadrupedal canid.

Who is speaking

Compiler A again — a fictional investigator signing the file. The dedication is to the research group in that frame. Copyright is Z. Reynolds.

This document does not begin with a theory. It begins with a problem. The problem is this: the werewolf mythology is too consistent, too specific, and too globally distributed to be the product of independent human imagination. The full moon. The transformation. The inherited predisposition. The specific sensitivity to silver. The lost time, the physical cost, the dawn reversal. These features appear not in one or two traditions but in dozens, across cultures separated by oceans and millennia. The conventional explanation predicts nothing. It cannot account for the specificity of silver.
Preface: The Question the Myth Is Asking
From the field desk
The moon does not emit radiation. It reflects sunlight at an albedo of approximately twelve per cent, producing at its brightest perhaps one three-hundred-thousandth of noon. And yet something is happening. At full moon, and only at full moon, the opposition surge delivers a high-coherence photon flux with a documented wavelength dependence concentrated near 415 nm — the secondary activation shoulder of melanopsin, sitting on the ipRGCs that do not make images. A bright lamp at equivalent lux does not reproduce this. Gibbous moonlight does not. The Lycian trigger is not magic. It is the same photoreceptor pathway, prepared by eight hundred thousand years of integrated retroviral genetics to answer it at a different intensity.
LCAN Ch. 1 — The Photobiological Ignition Key

Science pillars

The mechanism, named

LERV

Lycian Endogenous Retrovirus. Integrated in the lineage ancestral to sapiens and neanderthalensis. Approximately eight per cent of the human genome is already retroviral. LERV is the one that still fires.

Photobiological key

An LR-1 receptor variant on intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. Opposition surge. Not a curse. A wavelength.

Hydraulic engine

Mass-conserving somatic restructuring. Hyper-muscular crouched bipedal phenotype, altered facial musculature, keratin-shaft pseudo-coat. Not a true quadrupedal canid.

Silver, second route

Cytochrome c oxidase inhibition amplified by Lycian mitochondrial density. Same metal as the haemophage vulnerability. Different molecular target. Convergence is evidence.

Dawn recovery

The shift reverses. The cost does not. Exhaustion, CK elevation, and the clinical misdiagnoses that have buried the phenotype in plain sight.

The identity problem

Who is the person who shifts. Chapter 30 treats personal identity with the seriousness the biology requires.
