Working memory, delay of gratification, narrative self, the capacity to not do the next motor impulse — the functions that make a person a person in the ordinary sense — drop below operational threshold. What remains is subcortical: amygdala at ceiling, hypothalamic drive hierarchy, procedural memory in the basal ganglia and cerebellum. You can still run a known route. You cannot explain why.
