The man is gone. The beast remains. Lost time.

The part of the brain that plans and remembers goes offline. The body keeps working without a narrator.

The suppressed prefrontal

Neurobiology · Prefrontal cortex

Plate · LCAN · The suppressed prefrontal · theoretical reconstruction

Prefrontal cortex taken offline for the duration. Planning, inhibition, autobiographical report go dark. Folklore recorded the man gone and the beast remaining. The plate is a lobe with the supply cut.

A norepinephrine flood at this amplitude does not merely heighten arousal. It takes the prefrontal cortex offline. Working memory, delay of gratification, narrative self, the capacity to not do the next motor impulse — the functions that make a person a person in the ordinary sense — drop below operational threshold. What remains is subcortical: amygdala at ceiling, hypothalamic drive hierarchy, procedural memory in the basal ganglia and cerebellum. You can still run a known route. You cannot explain why.

adds a fourth drive on top of hunger, threat, and mate: an appetitive signal aimed at the specific metabolic object of the shift. The identity problem in Chapter 30 is not decorative philosophy. If the prefrontal is down, who is the agent of the next four hours. The folklore of lost time is anterograde narrative failure. The body was busy. The autobiographer was not.
