Elders. Bloodlines. A court of the night.

Rank is a smell. Older colonies emit a signal younger ones cannot fake, and submission is involuntary.

Chemical hierarchy

Colonies reading one another by pheromone concentration, drawn as a gradient in air, not a court. Rank, elders, bloodlines: the social words for a chemical field.

Immortal predators should not form courts. Game theory predicts perpetual zero-sum conflict: no children to protect, no senescence to make alliance rational, every other immortal a rival for the same finite prey. The haemophages form a hierarchy anyway because the colony is a social enforcement organ. Each colony emits a continuous pheromone whose complexity scales with colony age and metabolic history. A five-hundred-year colony writes a multi-component signal that a five-year colony cannot counterfeit.

Other hosts' Archon populations read that complexity through olfactory receptors the lentivirus grew for the purpose. Rank is not etiquette. Rank is a chemical gradient. Submission is a neuroendocrine event. The is what a biofilm looks like when the biofilm is wearing human bodies.
