A forty-two millimetre implant over the spine. What the cities do to sound, this does to one body.

A sub-dermal resonator at T4. Invisibility, the gift of not being seen: a civilian reading of active cancellation in a band human vision does not use well. The plate is a device under skin.
Plate 87 of the intake radiographic survey, lateral thorax, 6 November 1982: an oblate ellipsoid, 42 millimetres in longest dimension, dense, geometrically regular, midline over the T4 spinous process, immediately subcutaneous. Not bone. No surrounding inflammatory reaction. No capsule. Tissue integration complete. Excised 22 November in a ninety-minute dissection the Soviet team described as unexpectedly adherent.
This is the individual-scale : an implanted active-cancellation device. What the infrastructure does to a city, this object does to a body. The , if it is real, may begin here — not as a spell of forgetting but as a machine that takes the organism out of the acoustic and electromagnetic picture the surface uses to notice things.
